The Angel Next Door

International City Theatre presents the Los Angeles premiere of The Angel Next Door, a deliciously screwy rom-com by Paul Slade Smith, the playwright behind last season’s hit comedy The Outsider. Los Angeles directing veteran Cate Caplin is at the helm for a three-week run, June 13 through June 29, at ICT’s home in the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center. Two low-priced previews take place on June 11 and June 12. Young Oliver Adams is on the brink of a major success. His novel, “The Angel Next Door,” is about to be published — and famed Broadway playwrights Charlotte and Arthur Sanders have already adapted his book for what is sure to be a huge stage hit. And who do they have their eye on as the leading lady? Margot Bell, of course — the very person Oliver adores and about whom he has written his novel (although he hasn’t told her yet…). When they all converge for a weekend in Newport, Rhode Island along with Margot’s Broadway co-star, the vain but empty-headed Victor Pratt, the thin walls of the… Category: Theater / Concerts.

Annie Dorsen: Prometheus Firebringer

Annie Dorsen considers how the proliferation of artificial intelligence in our daily lives feels unprecedented and asks: “Have we been here before?” Each evening of this performance, the predictive text model GPT-4 generates speculative versions of the lost final play of Aeschylus’ Prometheia trilogy. Performed by a chorus of AI-generated Greek masks, this story from ancient Greek mythology tells how Prometheus stole the god’s fire for humans–sparking sudden and dramatic advances in technology and the arts, as well as dramatic new sources of conflict. Dorsen delivers a text composed entirely of quotes from the internet on tragedy and memory, what machines are learning from us, and knowledge (and ignorance) of societal undoing. At the heart of the piece lies the same question that philosopher Simon Critchley observes animates Greek tragedy: “What shall I do?” Probing existential questions about truth and agency, this engaging performance continues Dorsen’s exploration of the contradictory impacts of technology… Category: Theater / Concerts.

Moises Ortiz ǀ INTERSECTIONS

Solo is pleased to present Intersections by Moises Ortiz. The exhibition will run from June 29 until August 9, 2025, with an opening reception on Sunday, June 29, from 3 to 6 p.m. Moises Ortiz navigates the intersection of Cubist legacy, Italian Futurism, and the raw immediacy of post-graffiti aesthetics, forging a visual language that is both reverent and rebellious. His practice reimagines the ideologies of modernism, using experimental media as a means of disruption and dialogue between structure and spontaneity, history and now. At the heart of Ortiz’s work lies a rigorous exploration of essential form. Shapes become signals; arrangements become rhythms. Each composition is carefully orchestrated yet alive with emotional undercurrents and conceptual tension. This deliberate balance allows him to fuse the gestural force of abstract expressionism with a quiet, introspective intensity, rendering each piece a site of personal excavation as much as visual invention.
