International Asteroid Day

Comets/Asteroids This is the United Nations day "to raise public awareness about the asteroid impact hazard." Check out the Planetary Defenders documentary and the Planetary Defense Coordination Office. Asteroid Watch and the Near Earth Object Program site are also resources for staying up to date. Anniversary - Neil Armstrong's 95th Birthday (1930)

Human Spaceflight Neil A. Armstrong was born in Wapakoneta, Ohio, on August 5, 1930. He began his NASA career in Ohio. As spacecraft commander for Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing mission, Armstrong gained the distinction of being the first man to land a craft on the moon and first to step on its surface. National Aviation Day

Aeronautics Ever since 1939, August 19 has been celebrated as National Aviation Day, the legacy of a presidential proclamation first made by Franklin D. Roosevelt. Selected because it was Orville Wright’s birthday, the decision to revel in all things aeronautical came at an exciting time in aviation history.   Explore Aeronautics STEM for resources and activities for all ages, including even the youngest.  A paper airplane engineering station is always a good activity; check out Wingin’ It, and this Ring Wing Glider. International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer

Earth-Sun-Moon The ozone layer, a fragile shield of gas, protects the Earth from the harmful portion of the rays of the sun, thus helping preserve life on the planet. The phaseout of controlled uses of ozone depleting substances and the related reductions have not only helped protect the ozone layer for this and future generations, but have also contributed significantly to global efforts to address climate change; furthermore, it has protected human health and ecosystems by limiting the harmful ultraviolet radiation from reaching the earth.
