ON VIEW | April 30 – July 27, 2024
RECEPTION | May 2, 5 – 7 PM. Remarks at 5:45 PM, light refreshments served.

Goodrich (1902-1984) were early camera enthusiasts. Genthe moved to San Francisco before the 1906 earthquake and fire devastated Chinatown and much of the city. Goodrich was stationed in Beijing in the 1920s, during a period of political unrest in China. Although their images are largely positive, both Genthe and Goodrich made photos of the Chinese and their communities to satisfy Western curiosity about “exotic” places and people. ART EXHIBITION, Picturing Resilient Communities: Photographs of Chinese American Encounters in San Francisco’s Chinatown and Old Beijing (1900-1925)
ON VIEW | April 30 – July 27, 2024
RECEPTION | May 2, 5 – 7 PM. Remarks at 5:45 PM, light refreshments served.
This exhibition features old photographs taken in Beijing (formerly known as Peking) and San Francisco’s Chinatown. These cities have changed dramatically in the last 100+ years due to human actions and natural disasters. German American Arnold Genthe (1869-1942) and U.S. Marine Howard C. Goodrich was stationed in Beijing in the 1920s, during a period of political unrest in China. Although their images are largely positive, both Genthe and Goodrich made photos of the Chinese and their communities to satisfy Western curiosity about “exotic” places and people. Genthe’s photographs were…

The Art of Oceania: June 11th-14th
Join us this week as we explore the artists and artistic traditions of Oceania. Oceania is a collective name given to the more than 10,000 islands and island nations scattered throughout the Pacific Ocean. We will draw inspiration from traditions as divergent as the ancient aboriginal art of Australia, the thriving contemporary art scene in Hawaii, and the mysterious stone figures of Easter Island. Like the people of this part of the world, we will also take inspiration from the Pacific Ocean itself!
Each week students will create works inspired by the history, geography, culture, and art of a different country or region below the equator. Each 4 day camp will include a combination of two dimensional and three dimensional projects, and will be divided into a 6-10 year old age group and an 11-14 year old group. As always, we will learn a lot, play, explore, and expand our understanding of art and the world around us!

ON VIEW | April 30 – July 27, 2024
RECEPTION | May 2, 5 – 7 PM. Remarks at 5:45 PM, light refreshments served.

Goodrich was stationed in Beijing in the 1920s, during a period of political unrest in China. Although their images are largely positive, both Genthe and Goodrich made photos of the Chinese and their communities to satisfy Western curiosity about “exotic” places and people. Genthe’s photographs were…

The Art of the Andes: June 25th-28th
This week we will be exploring the artists and rich artistic traditions of the nations of the Andean Region including Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia. We will meet Pachamama and Pachapapa, learn the meaning of ayni, a living Andean philosophy of reciprocity, and be inspired by the bright colors of the textile arts that adorn the people and animals of the mountains. Join us!
