The profound social change and political unrest in 1960s Japan detonated an artistic explosion that upended the culture. Amélie Ravalec’s film documents the avant-garde artists of this period: pioneers of experimental and erotic photography, underground street theater, Butoh dance, surreal illustrations, and radical graphic design (including that of Tadanori Yokoo, who is featured in our exhibition Cut + Paste). Get a primer on Korean calligraphy, both traditional and experimental, from artisan Park Jinwoo. Delve into the history and practice of calligraphy as a long-standing art form in East Asia. Then learn about the artists in the field who are merging calligraphy with contemporary art, including Jinwoo himself!
Want to put what you've learned into practice? Follow up with hands-on calligraphy workshops on June 28 and June 29.
About Park Jinwoo
Park Jinwoo creates works based on traditional calligraphy. His goal is to reinterpret calligraphy, often regarded as outdated and old-fashioned, in a way that resonates with contemporary art. Jinwoo was born in Gyeongju, Korea, in 1981. He currently resides in both Virginia and Jeonju. In this psychedelic fantasia from the great Tsui Hark, two snake goddesses take on human form, and one falls in love with a man. But their love is threatened by a vengeful Buddhist monk with supernatural powers. Films
Godzilla (a.k.a. Gojira) is the roaring granddaddy of all monster movies. It’s also a remarkably humane and melancholy drama, made in Japan at a time when the country was reeling from nuclear bombing and H-bomb testing in the Pacific. The film’s rampaging, radioactive beast—the poignant embodiment of an entire population’s fears—became a beloved international icon of destruction, spawning almost thirty sequels. Experience this unique masterwork of art and design in a whole new way as natural light reveals details of James McNeill Whistler's painted interior and accents the gleaming surfaces of Charles Lang Freer's collection of Asian ceramics.
The shutters are open from noon to 5:30 p.m. every third Thursday of each month.

Gretchen and David Welch Conservator in Training Dhruvika Bisht will guide you through the fascinating world of these intricately decorated objects, which she is currently examining and preparing for conservation treatment. Explore a model showing how the boxes are built, examine pigments and materials up close, and view striking images—from artisans at work to glowing UV photos that uncover hidden details. Learn to draw designs based on the symmetry of nature and inspired by traditions from around the world. In this workshop, you'll use a compass and straightedge to recreate beautiful patterns. Meanwhile, you'll develop a solid grounding in the language of symmetry in sacred ornamental art.
Throughout human history, many cultures have used geometry to make art, directly inspired by the rhythms and structures of life itself. Principles like symmetry and tessellation govern how crystals and plants grow. In this sense, geometric art is beyond time and place.
