Christine Lafuente - All the Blooms You Are
All the Blooms You Are, a solo exhibition of work by Christine Lafuente, opens at the Somerville Manning Gallery on April 11 and continues through May 10, 2025.
Christine Lafuente is a still life and landscape oil painter known for her masterful use of color and painterly approach. Her show title, All the Blooms You Are, is a play on the title of the classic jazz standard, “All the Things You Are” – a love song of lyrical beauty composed of metaphorical phrases such as “kiss of springtime” and “the breathless hush of evening.” These are fitting words for an artist like Lafuente who considers her paintings to be poetic responses to visual experience.
After finishing her Bryn Mawr degree, she completed the certificate program from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and earned her MFA at Brooklyn College. Her work has been exhibited in the U.S. and internationally and has been the subject of 35 solo shows and numerous group shows. Through the course of her career, she has been the recipient of many gran…

Commissioner Sadeghi had this to say, “Having the JBJ Soul Kitchen Pop-Up be a part of the main branch of the Ocean County Library provides great opportunities for the library café and the JBJ Soul Kitchen Pop-Up. It has been a while since the space has been filled and this type of coordination will bring a lot of benefits to everyone involved. I…

Quintessence Theatre presents The Return of Benjamin Lay
Benjamin Lay - shepherd, sailor, revolutionary, and the British Empire’s first revolutionary abolitionist - returns from the grave almost 300 years after his death, as feisty and unpredictable as ever. The 4ft “David” confronts the “Goliath” of slavery as he demands once again to be readmitted into the Quaker community that disowned him for ideas considered dangerous and disruptive. How far will he go to share his prophetic vision knowing the cost of protest? Sweeping across the centuries and continents, The Return of Benjamin Lay is a hallucinatory exploration of the list of a radical who became one of the earliest revolutionary abolitionists.
The award-winning London production, “an important groundbreaking play” (Closeup Culture), by decorated playwright Naomi Wallace and historian Marcus Rediker, features “a riveting performance by Mark Povinelli” (Broadway World), direction by Royal Shakespeare Company Honorary Associate Ron Daniels, and set design by the acclaimed Riccardo Hernandez. The play crosses t…

Malandain Ballet Biarritz: The Seasons
France’s prestigious Malandain Ballet Biarritz performs in Philadelphia for the very first time in The Seasons, a full-length work set to The Four Seasons, both Vivaldi’s masterpiece and the lesser-known composition of the same name by Giovanni Antonio Guido. While drastically different, both works are a celebration of nature, and this is eloquently explored in choreographer Thierry Malandain’s masterful fusion of classical and contemporary styles. “The dance carries everything, from the joy of spring to the passions of summer…just a splendid invitation to meditate on the beauty of life and the passage of time.” (Le Figaro) Don’t miss your chance to see this stunning company in a rare U.S. appearance.

Almost Unknown, The Afric-American Picture Gallery
This new exhibition at Winterthur is inspired by a 19th-century essay by William J. Wilson, a free Black journalist and educator. Interpreted by curator and historian Jonathan Michael Square, the exhibition presents—for the first time ever—the gallery imagined by Wilson.
Wilson’s essay “The Afric-American Picture Gallery” was published in 1859 under the pen name “Ethiop” as a series of installments in the Anglo-African Magazine. It describes an imagined gallery space that Ethiop has curated. He leads a tour of the artworks that both celebrate and critique the experience of free and enslaved Black Americans in the 19th century.
Square has assembled drawings, paintings, sculptures, and objects from across the Winterthur collections to represent Wilson’s gallery and Black life in the United States and across the Diaspora.

The Colonial Theatre presents Shannon Curtis: 80s Kids
Shannon and Jamie are crisscrossing the country once again on their mission of MAXIMUM JOY — and this time they’re bringing the 80s with them!
When their 2023 album “Good to Me” started gaining traction internationally, synthpop spouses Shannon Curtis and Jamie Hill were faced with an unexpected question: how to extend their typical one-year album cycle while not stopping making recordings together?
Their answer was to start working their way down a list that they’d been keeping since they met in the early 2000s — of songs from their 1980s childhoods that they thought it might be fun to someday record their own versions of.
But where most artists attempt to put their own spin on cover songs, Curtis and Hill took an intentionally different approach: they attempted to recreate as closely as possible the feeling in the original recordings.
The one twist: Curtis would be lending her soaring alto to a collection of songs sung originally by men.
The result is an album of reverent renditions of all-time classic…

Veterans Tribute Grows at the Ocean County Library Waretown Branch
WARETOWN – A year ago, a small photo array in the Ocean County Library Waretown Branch honored several former military members in honor of Veterans Day. Today, thanks to community members who have added to it, the display fills an entire wall and is still growing.
Branch Manager Jennifer Lennon placed the first photos before Veterans Day 2023, a gesture for family members and friends who “wore the colors.” It caught the attention of patrons, visitors and neighbors who asked if they might contribute.
“We still have people coming in and taking time to look over the pictures,” Jennifer said. “They ask if everyone is local. Some ask to be added. It makes me happy every time it happens.”
There now are 55 images of local wartime and peacetime veterans, five times the size of the original display, complete with names, branches, and theaters of operation.
“I grew up in a military family. My dad, uncle and grandfather all served. So I have always had a very healthy respect for the military and its traditions,”…

Origins: The Lenape, William Penn, and the Colonists
Alliances and negotiations in the 1600s formed relationships between the indigenous Lenape and the Europeans who colonized what is now eastern Pennsylvania. Join us on May 8, 2025 at 7 PM in the Historic Waynesborough Carriage House for a presentation by Ellen Endslow that examines how the mutual respect for self-determination, shared land use, and freedom shifted as colonial leadership changed and settlers increased in the early 1700s. The presentation also looks at some of the decisions leading to the removal of indigenous people from Pennsylvania in order to share some insights into the Lenape today.
Ellen Endslow has been the Director of Collections/Curator at Chester County History Center for more than 25 years. She is primarily responsible for the Museum collection but also oversees the Library and Photo Archives. She is appreciative of ongoing opportunities to learn directly from the Lenape, scholars, and museum colleagues about these people and events.

How far will he go to share his prophetic vision knowing the cost of protest? Sweeping across the centuries and continents, The Return of Benjamin Lay is a hallucinatory exploration of the list of a radical who became one of the earliest revolutionary abolitionists.
