Friends of the Altadena Library Book Sale

Join the Friends of the Altadena Library for a used book sale on Saturday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, May 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Only Friends of the Library are able to shop on Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. but you can become a member on-site for $10. The sale is open to all from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. Thousands of books, DVDs, and more will be available for purchase. Audience: All-Ages Welcome. Enchanted Garden Workshop for Tweens with Leigh Adams

Join artist and educator Leigh Adams for an enchanted garden workshop. Children ages 8 - 12 will create an enchanted garden made of various recycled materials. All supplies are provided. Registration required. You can also enjoy an exhibition of Enchanted Gardens from April 30 to May 30 in the Main Library glass display case. Explore creative thinking and a world of enchanted gardens - miniature nature scenes made with recycled materials by children from the Norma Coombs Elementary School. About the Artist Leigh Adams is an educator and eco-sensitive designer. She has been a groundbreaking, horticultural interpreter at the LA County Arboretum and Botanic Gardens for many years and has trained many county agencies in regenerative practices. Teen Puppet Builder Workshop with Madison Girifalco

Come learn about Madison Girifalco’s work and how she became a puppet builder. Get hands-on experience on the basics of constructing a cardboard puppet! All supplies are provided. Forget-Me-Not Dementia Care & Resources

Join us for a panel discussion about dementia care and resources from a variety of perspectives. Speakers will share tips followed by a Q&A. Kat Primeau (she/her) is an artist, grief doula, and peer support specialist. Her personal experience includes caregiving for her dad, John, who had frontotemporal degeneration and ALS, and her grandmother, Jackie, who had Alzheimer’s. Meet Us on the Lawn for Yoga with Merry: Yoga Workshop Series

Let’s Move in Libraries is designed to encourage and support public libraries to create programs that support healthy communities. This includes cooking classes, gardening classes, mindfulness programs, and movement-based classes. In May, we invite you to a yoga movement series. Space is limited, and we are looking for participants able to commit to three fun days (5/17, 5/24, 5/31). The three sessions are a single series so only one registration required. All skill levels are welcome. Please bring a towel or mat and dress in comfortable clothes. Water will be provided but bringing your water bottle is highly recommended. Tween Zine Workshop with Rachel Curry

Zines, or self-published DIY magazines have been used for decades as a tool for radical communication and creative self expression. In this tween workshop with teaching artist and zinester Rachel Curry, participants will learn about the history of zines while creating their own one of a kind zine using collage and mixed media techniques. Registration required. Ages 8-12 welcomed. About the Artist Rachel Curry is a teaching artist, letterpress printer, bookbinder, zinester, and fiber artist from Los Angeles, California. She received her BA in Art Education with an emphasis in Fiber Arts from CSULB and has experience teaching at institutions such as Otis College of Art and Design, The Huntington Library, and Craft Contemporary, as well as high schools and community organizations across Southern California. Fab Lab Found Sound Songcraft

You will learn about and practice intentional listening skills with Elijah Pouges, AKA BRZ, a musician and sound artist in Los Angeles. We will learn how to listen for sounds, record them using field recording equipment, and plan for the second workshop's song creation project. This will be a two-part workshop. Space is limited, and registration required. The sound walk and field recording is on May 16, and please be prepared to move from the library to nearby areas via the sidewalk for 30-45 minutes. On May 30, you will learn to incorporate your recordings into a musical project. We will be using StudioOne audio software in the Fab Lab.  About the presenter Elijah Pouges is a producer, sound, and performing artist under the moniker brz (pronounced “breeze”). Friends of the Altadena Library (FOAL) Annual Meeting

Join the Friends of the Altadena Library at its annual meeting for an IN-PERSON event in the Community Room at the Main Library. FOAL will hold a  short meeting to present its yearly contribution to the Library and to propose the slate of new Board Members for the coming year. Voting for Officers and Board Members can only be done by members. The Ben Band

This is a Lunch at the Library event. Join The Ben Band for some family-friendly songs! Ben sings about the animals native to his Australian homeland, including kookaburras, emus, wombats, and platypuses. Hike with a Librarian!

Story Stones! Get Creative!

This is a Lunch at the Library event. Draw or paint objects, scenes, or patterns on smooth stones. Reuse magazine clippings with watered-down glue. Once the stones are dry, gather them. Eaton Canyon Trash Pick-Up Hike for Teens

Come join us for an early morning Eaton Canyon hike to get some fresh air and to pick up trash on the trail! All pickup materials will be provided by Eaton Canyon. Meet-up and pick-up will be designated in front of the Eaton Canyon Nature Center (1750 N Altadena Dr, Pasadena, CA 91107). We will have limited snacks provided but please have your own water bottle. Spots are limited, registration is required. Volunteer hours will be provided to those in the Teen Volunteer Program. Safety notes: When hiking at Eaton Canyon, you want to make sure to wear hiking boots or good closed toe walking shoes, you want to wear light color clothing in the summer, bring a hat, water bottle, sunscreen, and a light snack. "Visible Mending" Workshop w/ Dizzy Studios

This is a Lunch at the Library event. Kindly bring your own clothes that require some TLC and we’ll learn how to use a speedweave, a tool for repairing holes in fabric. With hands-on demonstrations and instructions, each participant will gain the confidence to darn their own garment, transforming it from worn to adorned. As a special bonus, all attendees will receive a speedweave kit to take home, so they can continue their mending journey after the workshop. Supplies are limited. Los Angeles County Beekeepers Association Presentation

Learn about native bees in your community at a presentation by the Los Angeles County Beekeepers' Association and observe live bees in an Observation Hive. About the presenters Mary Landau is a mother of 3 college grads, all musicians. She moved to Altadena in 1976 and is still living in the same house. She has spent most of her life educating children. For more than 30 years, she has taught preschool through 6th grade. Over 20 years ago, she joined The Los Angeles County Beekeepers Association (est. 1873) to find out what to tell children about honeybees, besides, “Don’t kill them!” Through her work with the California Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom (now known as Learn About Ag), California Women for Agriculture, and The California School Garden Network, she has brought her lessons to hundreds of children in the greater L.A. area. Dance with Me! Session B

Join dance instructors from Unbound Dance Studio for a fun introduction to dance and movement! This class is for ages 1-5 and includes participation from a caregiver. Dance With Me is a fun introduction to creative movement for our youngest dancers, giving them a chance to explore moving different parts of their bodies in new ways, dancing with props, and movement games with music! This class will be offered twice at the following times. Families may only register for one session. Furoshiki Hands-On Demonstration

Join Kumi Corsa in a hands on demonstration of the Japanese art of sustainable gift wrapping with cloth. Participants will receive a cloth of their own to take home. About the presenter Kumi grew up in Tokyo, Japan and became fascinated with the Japanese tradition of furoshiki at an early age. She has collaborated and held sustainable holiday furoshiki gift-wrapping events with various luxury lifestyle, fashion, beauty and wellness brands and retailers, including well-known Certified B companies such as French fashion house Chloe and Australian beauty brand Aesop. Kumi has also held furoshiki workshops for various cultural and educational institutions such as Japan House.
