Wednesday, September 24, 2025 | 6–8 pm | Free
Join artist Adama Delphine Fawundu as she discusses her work and the exhibition salt 17: Adama Delphine Fawundu in conversation with Yvonne Mpow. This free artist talk in the Dumke Auditorium at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts will deepen your understanding of the works on view in the latest salt exhibition and their connection to the UMFA’s African Art collection.
The works in this exhibition were made with a process that Fawundu calls “kpoto patchwok,” a combination of the Mende word for gathering fruits and nuts for communal nourishment (kpoto) and the Krio word for piecing together textiles (patchwok). By drawing together materials from Congo, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Brazil, Nigeria, and Utah, Fawundu stitches together a collective history of the African diaspora that imagines a more interconnected future. Her work is displayed in conversation with objects from the UMFA’s African Art collection, which…

Life After Dead Pool
After decades of drought, the American West is stretched to the breaking point. A changing climate and design flaws in the Glen Canyon Dam have pushed the once-massive Lake Powell reservoir to the brink of collapse—putting at risk millions of people who depend on the Colorado River for water, agriculture, and electricity. Now, as Glen Canyon reemerges, its surprising ecological rebirth reminds us that nature’s capacity to heal may well outpace our own imaginations.
Environmental journalist Zak Podmore explores the complex challenges ahead and reframes the inevitable loss of Lake Powell as a turning point for a more sustainable future. Through an arresting mix of science and storytelling, Life After Dead Pool debunks the notion that the West’s water challenges are unsolvable and invites us to secure a future where the Colorado River once again runs free.

Lee E. Teitelbaum Utah Law Review Symposium - Fireproofing the FDA: Power, Politics, and Public Health
This symposium will explore a revitalization of the FDA’s original missions—public health and consumer protection—by probing the intersection of politics, public health, and power at the organization. The FDA is currently facing political interference as well as cuts to its staff and budget that could compromise its ability to appropriately vet medical products. At the same time, FDA experts have observed that the agency needs significant reform to meet U.S. needs in the 21st century.
This convening will emphasize the “how”: the methods and approaches to strengthen medical product vetting while defending the FDA from interference. These goals bear some tension—and yet law and policy are well familiar with managing competing goals. Lessons for how the FDA can be “fireproofed,” drawing from FDA history, administrative law, political science, or other regulatory agencies, are encouraged. At the same time, changes to the way FDA operates may be needed to optimize the review of medical products on behalf o…

Sculpting in Time: Land Art in the 21st Century
As historical land artworks re-enter public view, this panel asks what it means to care for artworks made from stone, fire, and time. Using new installations on Powder Mountain as a starting point to explore land art in the region more broadly, this discussion explores how institutions can honor the integrity of past works while introducing them to new audiences, in new contexts. What do maintenance and stewardship mean when the original impulse was anti-institutional, ephemeral, or site-specific?
This discussion is grounded in the specific challenges of land art in the American West, from its geographic isolation to the logistical demands of presentation. But it also pushes beyond logistics: What principles should guide us when we revisit historical works? How can we remain artist-centered in our approach to conservation and re-presentation? And what might a next generation of land art look like—responsive to climate, history, and public life?
The panel will explore the need for long-term commitment an…

Art + Cinema: The Rider
In partnership with the University of Utah Department of Film and Media Arts, the UMFA is excited to host a special screening of The Rider (2017), the critically acclaimed film from director Chloé Zhao.
After a tragic riding accident, young cowboy Brady (Brady Jandreau), once a rising star of the rodeo circuit, is warned that his competition days are over. Back home in South Dakota, Brady finds himself questioning what remains when he can no longer do the one thing that gave his life meaning: to ride and compete. In an effort to regain control of his fate, he sets out on a deeply personal journey to rediscover his identity and redefine what it means to be a man in the heartland of America.
The film features a remarkable cast of non-professional Lakota actors from the Pine Ridge Reservation playing fictionalized versions of themselves, including Jandreau—who grew up riding and training horses—as well as his father, sister, wife, and close friends.
Following the screening, join us for a post-film…

Cindi Textor, Department of World Languages and Cultures
Cindi Textor, Associate Professor in the Department of World Languages and Cultures at the University of Utah, will give a public talk this spring drawing from her research on transnational Japan. Her scholarship examines Japan not as an isolated culture, but as a site where ideas and empires meet, focusing especially on the enduring legacies of Japanese imperialism and its intersections with American and other western empires. She is now at work on a second book that explores how modern Japan has engaged with and reconfigured white supremacist ideology, often through processes of translation.
