Economics CAKE Talk: Francesco Sergi

All are welcome to attend Colloquium for the Advancement of Knowledge in Economics (CAKE) talks sponsored by the Economics Department in the College of Social and Behavioral Science. Francesco Sergi will be presenting on "Another History of Macroeconomics: Computers and Commons" Abstract: Textbooks in macroeconomics usually present the history of the discipline as a sequence of theoretical controversies between a few ‘schools of thought’ led by ‘great authors’. Historians of macroeconomics have been documenting, during the past decade, that the history of macroeconomics is actually richer and more diverse. This alternative history of macroeconomics, emphasizes the contribution to the discipline of many different communities, both inside and outside of academia, as well as the crucial role played, alongside theory, by a broad set of tools (mathematical techniques, data collection routines, empirical methods, and computer programming). Economics CAKE Talk: Sofia Valeonti

All are welcome to attend Colloquium for the Advancement of Knowledge in Economics (CAKE) talks sponsored by the Economics Department in the College of Social and Behavioral Science. Sofia Valeonti will be presenting on "John Sherman of Ohio: Finance Minister of the American Civil War Era" Abstract: During the US Reconstruction era (1865-1879), that followed the Civil War, the US chose to follow a policy mix of protectionism and resumption of gold payments at pre-war parity. John Sherman, an Ohioan senator and later Treasury Secretary, steered the country towards this policy combination. The combination of gold payments and protectionism may seem as an incoherent policy, but we argue that Sherman used this policy mix as a tool to promote his vision of US economic development. A vision that included US industrialization, as well as the development of capital-intensive agriculture.
