SafeCampus Violence Prevention and Response Training
During this interactive training, we ask participants to consider their unique role in preventing violence at the University of Washington. This training has been adapted to consider the remote academic environments that many staff, students, and faculty are currently experiencing. We will explore mental health and warning signs of different forms of violence including; workplace violence, relationship violence, sexual harassment, and stalking. We will briefly practice in-person and remote bystander intervention techniques and build your understanding of UW resources.

ATMOS Special Seminar
Speaker: Hing Ong, Independent Researcher
Title: Revisiting Tropical Dynamics: New Insights on the MJO and Double ITCZ Bias
Host: Professor Greg Hakim, ghakim@uw.edu
Abstract:
Tropical atmospheric dynamics continue to pose major challenges in both theoretical understanding and global climate modeling. In this talk, I present recent work that offers new insights on two long-standing problems: the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) and the double intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) bias.
For the MJO, I revisit the derivation of equatorial waves by relaxing the thermodynamic assumptions and emphasizing geometry. My scale analysis suggests that equatorial Kelvin waves with planetary wavenumber 1 have an intrinsic period of 36 to 64 days, given a ratio of planetary radius to meridional e-folding length of 6 to 8. This result implies that the MJO's characteristic intraseasonal timescale may be fundamentally linked to wave geometry, offering a unifying constraint across competing theories.
For the double-ITCZ…

Forest Bathing (in-person)
Cost: $25
Advance registration required.
Join UW Botanic Gardens and Cascadia Forest Therapy for a unique forest bathing opportunity in the Washington Park Arboretum. Forest bathing (or shinrin-yoku) has been popular in Japan for decades and is gaining momentum in the US. The practice encourages you to move in nature at a slower pace and take in the atmosphere around you. Multiple scientific studies have shown that the practice lowers stress and blood pressure levels, while increasing immune system functioning, making you more resilient to diseases and illness.
During this class the guide, in partnership with the forest, will offer an evolving series of invitations crafted to help participants slow down and open their senses. The opening of one’s senses encourages mindfulness, which readies the heart and mind to be fully present in the natural world. Come discover the medicine of being in the forest.

Friends of Seattle's Olmsted Parks Walking Tour: University of Washington Campus
Price: $30
REGISTER ONLINE, Financial aid spots available; first come, first serve. Join the Friends of Seattle’s Olmsted Parks on the first of two walking tours of Seattle’s Olmsted Brothers historic design legacy this summer!
Relocated from downtown northward to larger, less-developed acreage in 1895, the University of Washington consisted of just six buildings when the Olmsted Brothers firm prepared a general campus plan in 1903. John Charles Olmsted returned in 1906 to design the grounds for the 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition (AYPE), which attracted over three million people to Seattle (population 240,000) that year. Olmsted incorporated the campus into the overall city park system and encouraged the university’s regents to reserve part of the campus for public park uses. Today it is an important element of the city’s open space infrastructure.

Forest Bathing (in-person)

Friends of Seattle's Olmsted Parks Walking Tour: Washington Park Arboretum
Price: $30
REGISTER ONLINE, Financial aid spots available; first come, first serve. Join the Friends of Seattle’s Olmsted Parks on the final walking tour of Seattle’s Olmsted Brothers parks and parkways this summer!
The city first acquired Washington Park from the Puget Mill Company in 1900. By 1904, the city hired the Olmsted Brothers firm to prepare drawings for a roadway alignment through the park. Plans for how a “pleasure drive” would connect Lake Washington Boulevard to the university campus through Washington Park evolved quickly over the next several months.
The Olmsted Brothers firm would not address Washington Park design again until the 1930’s, when James Dawson was hired to provide a master plan for creating an arboretum within the park. Features of the Olmsted Brothers’ plans that are most evident today include Lake Washington Boulevard, Azalea Way, the Stone Cottage and Stone Overlook, and the pond in the Japanese Garden.
