Title: Where is RobotGPT?
Abstract: The last years have seen astonishing progress in the capabilities of generative AI techniques, particularly in the areas of language and visual understanding and generation. Key to the success of these models are the use of image and text data sets of unprecedented scale along with models that are able to digest such large datasets. We are now seeing the first examples of leveraging such models to equip robots with open-world visual understanding and reasoning capabilities. Unfortunately, however, we have not achieved the RobotGPT moment; these models still struggle with reasoning about geometry and physical interactions in the real world, resulting in brittle performance on seemingly simple tasks such as manipulating objects in the open world. A crucial reason for this problem is the lack of data suitable to train powerful, general models for robot decision making and control.
In this talk, I will discuss approaches to generating large datasets for training robot manipul…

Title: Data-driven Lagrangian reduced-order models and control of soft swimming robots
Abstract: Soft swimming robots provide a quieter and safer solution to underwater exploration than other forms of autonomous underwater vehicles, which are often propeller-driven. Anguilliform swimming is an effective mode of locomotion utilized by elongated fish like eels and oarfish to travel long distances. It is characterized by the use of full-body undulations that produce thrust and it proves highly energy efficient. Mimicking these swimming forms through actuation, sensing, and control is challenging. In this talk, we present efforts towards learning the low-dimensional dynamics from high-dimensional data, and designing closed-loop model predictive controllers to track natural swimming modes. In that direction, we first describe a method to leverage the Lagrangian model description of the anguilliform swimmer to learn structure-preserving reduced-order models via Lagrangian Operator Inference. Specifically, the data…

PI/Fac Mini Report Due
Our next quarterly report to NSF is coming up, meaning it is time for a mini report using this prompt:
Describe what has been accomplished in the past quarter, approx. September-December. Which projects have been successful; how project successes enable other projects to move forward; address progress, delays, setbacks, and plans to address these; and other considerations as appropriate. Organize your response by foundational AI research, other Institute research, and benefits of use-inspired research (definitions below). Any format/file type is fine, as well as any length , Bonus points for telling me which thrust(s) your project(s) fall under , Feel free to report anything else you think we should know, e.g. awards, recent jobs landed by your postdocs or students, etc. Due date: end of day, December 12, 2025
