Rob Rhee's Promotion Exhibition

Jacob Lawrence Gallery Please join us this autumn at the Jacob Lawrence Gallery for Assistant Professor Rob Rhee's promotion exhibition. Opening reception: September 9, 5-7pm.  RSVP highly encouraged to receive updates as details of the exhibition and promotion lecture get finalized. Rob Rhee is Assistant Professor and Chair of Interdisciplinary Visual Art (IVA). Rhee's work encompasses sculpture, performance, and critical writing. Rhee has exhibited nationally at the Portland Art Museum, Oregon; the Hunterdon Art Museum, New Jersey; White Columns, New York; Fort Worth Contemporary Arts, Texas; and the Korean Cultural Center, Los Angeles. He has also exhibited internationally at the 10th Berlin Biennale and the Ilmin Museum of Art, South Korea. Most recently, Rhee has had work in a two-person exhibition, Subspontaneous, at Frye Art Museum in Seattle. He was an Assistant Professor in the Interdisciplinary Foundations and Art Programs at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle from 2014 to 2020. Woven in Wool: Resilience in Coast Salish Weaving

Outside the School Embrace the power of wool weaving in all its forms. Centuries-old Coast Salish weaving traditions are a core part of ceremony and celebration, yet remain under-appreciated by the public. Woven in Wool features both historical Salish wool weavings and new creations by contemporary weavers, including robes, vests, tunics, tumplines, and skirts, as well as weaving tools and materials. Firstperson voices from the Salish weaving communities will contextualize their own history and artistic traditions, leading visitors through the process of weaving and a seasonal story of creation: gathering, processing & spinning, dyeing, and weaving. This exhibit is a collaboration between the Coast Salish Wool Weaving Center (CSWWC) co-curators and members of the Burke’s staff. Together, they will examine the creation of woven artworks and the extensive cultural and scientific knowledge embedded in woven textiles, which connect generations and reflect relationships with the world around us.
