Turkic and Central Eurasian Studies Seminar: Language Oppression in Tibet

Turkic and Central Eurasian Studies Seminar: Language Oppression in Tibet Professor Gerald Roche, La Trobe University Australia Thousands of language communities around the world today face an uncertain future, with estimates suggesting that half the world’s languages will no longer be used by the end of the century. This talk will examine the broad global issue through a localized case study, the Manegacha speakers of the northeast Tibetan Plateau, in what is today the People’s Republic of China. Currently, the Manegacha language is in the process of being replaced by Tibetan, which is itself a minoritized language within China under threat from the national language, Mandarin. Drawing on extensive research in Tibet stretching back nearly two decades, this talk will discuss the complex political dynamics driving this situation in relation to state-building, nationalism, global civil society, and everyday violence. Sexuality & Queer Studies Capstone Colloquium Presented by Maxine Savage: "Sodomitical Sovereignty: Iceland's (Post)Colonial Behind"

Maxine Savage's dissertation, "North Adjacent: Race, Sex, and the Spatiotemporality of Borealism" resists exoticizing discourses of the Arctic and sub-Arctic North that undergird conceptions of the Nordic as always already white, normatively masculine, and heterosexual. In examining the "North," Maxine considers the reach of this racializing, gendering, and sexualizing force in contemporary sites of former and ongoing Nordic colonization. In this colloquium, Maxine will present on their chapter "Sodomitical Sovereignty; Iceland's (Post)Colonial Behind" which explores in/human racialized desire in cinematic and literary texts that orbit Iceland’s sovereignty from Denmark. Examining scenes of anal intercourse between flesh, stone, and metal, they work to destabilize historical narratives of Iceland’s sovereignty. Event interval: Single day event. Psychology Edwards Colloquium with Henk Kiers, Ph.D., University of Groningen, and Jorge Tendeiro, Hiroshima University

This is a hybrid event. Bayesian alternatives to null hypothesis significance testing, Henk Kiers, Ph.D. Professor in Statistics and data analysis, University of Groningen, The Netherlands Jorge Tendeiro, Professor in Bayesian statistics and inference, Hiroshima University, Japan Null hypothesis significance testing (NHST) and its p-value are ubiquitous in scientific practice. However, misuse and misinterpretation of these crucial tools is well documented. Various suggestions to fix, or replace, NHST have been offered. In this talk we will discuss some options that fall under the Bayesian inferential framework. We will introduce null hypothesis Bayesian testing (NHBT) and its Bayes factor as the direct Bayesian analogues to NHST and the p-value, respectively. Important differences between the two approaches will be highlighted. Furthermore, we will emphasize that, just as NHST needs to be accompanied by effect size estimates, so does NHBT. ESS Colloquium: Stephanie Olson (Purdue University) "Habitability and Biosignatures of Worlds with Extreme Seasons"

Keywords: astrobiology, exoplanets, habitability Abstract: We expect that exoplanets in the habitable zone of their host stars will experience a large diversity of seasonal cycles, ranging from negligible to extreme. The consequences of both end-member scenarios for habitability and life are not well understood, but recent work suggests that extreme seasonality could increase biological productivity and amplify biosignature detectability through its impacts on ocean stratification. This talk will explore several dimensions of habitability, from the prospects for an independent origin of life to the likelihood of biospheric progression towards animal-grade complexity. This talk will also discuss how seasonality may affect the relationship between biosignature production and biosignature detectability with future telescopes such as the Habitable Worlds Observatory. Quinn Dombrowski: "Shift Happens: Unlocking Old Corpora with Transkribus”

From corpora available for purchase to natural language processing models, to out-of-the-box tools for text analysis, scholars working with English enjoy many advantages. The comparatively limited market for digitized corpora with reasonable metadata in languages other than English means that many scholars are left to fend for themselves, or collaborate within their linguistic communities, to create the materials that form the starting point for their research. The combination of this DIY spirit with resource constraints -- such as difficulties finding volunteers for crowdsourced manual transcription -- has led to innovations in shared infrastructure for AI-powered transcription. This talk will introduce Transkribus, a platform for training and sharing machine-learning models on handwritten and historic printed text, as well as the READ Co-Op that maintains the software and shapes its developments. Drawing on multilingual examples from Stanford University Library Special Collections, researchers' own materia… Event interval: Single day event. Campus location: Denny Hall (DEN). Campus room: 159. Displacing Kinship: The Intimacies of Intergenerational Trauma in Vietnamese American Cultural Production

Nearly fifty years after the end of the war in Vietnam, American children of Vietnamese refugees continue to process the meanings of the war and its consequences through creative work. Analyzing social science studies, policy, and the art, film, music, and literature of Vietnamese Americans as cultural productions, Displacing Kinship examines how these representations of Vietnamese refugee families register not simply the lived experiences of war, but rather the day to day experiences of racism and marginalization. The Authoritarian Politics of Rehabilitation

Exploring the history and politics of the Philippine Refugee Processing Center in Morong, Bataan, this talk considers the Filipino English teacher as a critical figure in the U.S.-Philippine program for refugee rehabilitation. Recruited as an ideal figure of instruction and rehabilitation, the teacher illuminates the intersections of colonial language instruction, state development, and international human rights discourse. The U.S.-based English language training journal Passage offers insight into the critical role that English language training played in the transformation of the refugee for eventual relocation. I analyze one piece published in that journal: an epistolary text by instructor Ruby Ibañez in which the teacher assumes the voice of the refugee student in ways that conform to and confound the proposed vertical relations of the processing center. This talk focuses on one chapter of Postcolonial Configurations: Dictatorship, the Racial Cold War, and Filipino America (Duke University Press, 2023),… Event interval: Single day event. Book Launch: Late Industrialization, Tradition, and Social Change in South Korea

The book proposes a new framework for macro social change under late industrialization by analyzing the specific process of interactions between economic tasks and tradition through the state’s mediation. ESS Colloquium: Alison Banwell (CIRES, University of Colorado Boulder) "Antarctic ice-shelf surface melt and hydrology: Implications for dynamics and break-up"

Keywords: Cryosphere, ice sheets, ice shelves, fieldwork, satellite remote sensing, modeling Abstract: About 75% of Antarctica is buttressed by floating ice shelves, which regulate the rate that grounded ice is lost to the ocean, where it contributes to sea-level rise. Since the 1990s, many ice shelves have thinned, and in some cases disintegrated. With projected future increases in atmospheric temperatures, models suggest that surface meltwater production will rise non-linearly, and as a result, ice shelves will become more vulnerable to surface meltwater-induced breakup events. Initially focusing on the George VI Ice Shelf, Antarctic Peninsula, I will first present field and satellite-based observations, which reveal insights into the role surface meltwater on ice-shelf dynamics such as flexure and fracture. Second, I will present results of our study which combined satellite microwave data and a sophisticated snow model to quantify Antarctic-wide ice-shelf surface meltwater volume over the last four decad… Event interval: Single day event. Fixing the Image: Ultrasound and the Visuality of Care in Phnom Penh

Join us for a conversation with Jenna Grant, Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology, on her new book "Fixing the Image: Ultrasound and the Visuality of Care in Phnom Penh." In "Fixing the Image," Grant draws on years of ethnographic and archival research to theorize the force and appeal of medical imaging in the urban landscape of Phnom Penh. Set within long genealogies of technology as tool of postcolonial modernity, and vision as central to skilled diagnosis in medicine and Theravada Buddhism, ultrasound offers stabilizing knowledge and elicits desire and pleasure, particularly for pregnant women. Grant offers the concept of "fixing"—which invokes repair, stabilization, and a dose of something to which one is addicted—to illuminate how ultrasound is entangled with practices of care and neglect across different domains.  About the speaker Jenna Grant is a cultural anthropologist working in the fields of medical anthropology, science and technology studies, visual anthropology, and Southeast… Event interval: Single day event.
