Ph.D. Dissertation Defense Talk: Improved XOR Lemmas for Communication Complexity
Speaker: Siddharth Iyer Vaidynathan, Advisor: Anup Rao, Supervisory Committee: Anup Rao (Chair), Dan Mikulincer (GSR, Mathematics), Paul Beame, Thomas Rothvoss (Mathematics), Abstract: We give communication lower bounds for computing the n-fold XOR of a given Boolean function f, in both the deterministic and the randomized setting. In addition, we also give deterministic communication lower bounds on computing the composition of 2 functions, g◦f(x,y) := g(f(x1,y1),...f(xn,yn)). Below for some absolute constant C_0 and any C > C_0 we show:
1. Randomized XOR Lemma. If f requires C bits to be computed with some constant success probability then, computing the parity of f on n instances, even with probability 1/2 + exp(-Ω(n)) requires Ω(√n C/log(nC)) communication.
2. Deterministic XOR Lemma. If f requires C bits to be computed deterministically then, computing the parity of f on n instance deterministically requires Ω(n√C) bits.
3. Lifting Theorem. For any Boolean function g on n bits, with…
