Accessibility & Data Visualization Workshop (online)

Data visualization best practices and tools do not always discuss accessibility, which can exclude many groups of people. This workshop will review ways to make your visualizations more accessible. We will work through a visualization together and add features to make it more accessible. You are encouraged to follow along, but no active participation is necessary. Joshua Miele book talk: Global Accessibility Awareness Day w/ CREATE

Connecting Dots book talk with Joshua Miele - CREATE collaborator Joshua Miele will talk about his new memoir. In the book, Miele shares his unique approaches to solving accessibility challenges, such as automated tools for generating tactile maps, a somewhat shady scheme for crowd-sourcing descriptions of YouTube videos, and a brief but brutal sabotage campaign against inaccessible ATMs in the late 90s. Along the way, he talks about canes and dogs, braille and babies, screen readers and spacecraft, and the rebellion and romance throughout his life that ties them all together. Registration required. Human-Computer Interaction Conference - Wisconsin

HCIC 2025: The Future of Being Human in a Generative AI World: Principles, Methods and Education In-person, UW is a member of HCIC, a unique organization that hosts an annual workshop that attracts leading researchers in HCI in a small and collegial environment. The workshop has a relatively unique format, emphasizing more substantial presentations by more established members of the community (e.g. 40 minute presentations with a discussant, there is a rule that students participate throughout the workshop but do not give full presentations). In addition to the many benefits that faculty gain from discussions with such a group, prior faculty and student participants have described it as a great opportunity for strong doctoral students to engage with top HCI researchers (e.g. developing connections for job searches, internships, or collaborations that they felt were based in part on interactions they had with people while at HCIC).
